Self-Evaluation free essay sample

When I was a little girl, I’ve always tried selling anything I could such as: baked goods, lemonade, and even homemade crafts. I’ve always loved meeting strangers and trying to convince them that whatever I have to sell is something they need in their life. I’ve also always had an interest in the creative side of marketing. I’d love to be the person deciding how to promote a new product that would please both the company and the customers. I’m researching both fields to help me better distinguish which career best suits me. Marketing Careers and Training. About. com. About. com, n. d. Web. 2013. According to the article, the marketing industry is rapidly expanding and the needs of customers are constantly changing. Just knowing the basic principles of marketing will no longer suffice as a way to be successful. The Editors. Wetfeet LLC, 2012. Web. 29 Sept. 2013. Continuing my research on marketing, the next source I chose was Wetfeet. com. This article was another recommendation from my professor. Before getting into specifics, the article gave an overview of what a marketer’s job entails and some of the common misconceptions made by customers. Marketing is the strategic function between product development and sales. There are four components to marketing which include: product, price, promotion, and place. Based on whether the product is considered high-end or low-end, the marketing team creates a selling approach. According to the article, these are the responsibilities of a marketing manager. Upon reading this, I began thinking this was a job that I could possibly see myself pursuing. The article then goes into great detail about the requirements of a marketer such as having certain degrees and having sharp communication skills. Similar to the first article, wetfeet. com listed current job opportunities in the economy and the future growth of this field. Finally, the article concluded with the potential salaries that a marketer can earn. Thanks to this website, I have a better idea of what career within marketing that I want to research. N/A. Director of Sales and Marketing. Society for Human Resource Management. SHRM, n. d. Web. 03 Nov. 2013. While reading the job requirements of several marketing positions, the job of a Marketing Director caught my eye. Between 2010 and 2020, this position is estimated to expand by 13. 6 percent. At first glance, this job looks to be very demanding but I’m willing to put in the time and dedication required. Among the vast duties of a director, some include: developing product position and packaging, manages marketing operating budgets, monitors competitor product, establish relationships with strategic partners, and also evaluates market research and strategy to meet the changing market. Apart from their own job requirements, directors are also responsible for managing their staff and recruiting new employees. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and a minimum of five years of related experience with managerial experience. Marketing directors must be able to effectively communicate both written and orally. While this job seems to be very involved when it comes to the effort and dedication required, the payoff is worth it. The annual expected salary for a typical Marketing Director in the United States is $120,172. Ad Basics. About Advertising. About. com, n. d. Web. 2013. Switching gears, I began looking up information about advertising. About. com had detailed explanations about marketing so I decided to look up advertising as well and was not disappointed. Unlike the other two articles, this one began with what an advertiser is. The job of an advertiser can range from creating brochures and pamphlets to advertising online for businesses. Most people assume only creative people can advertise but this isn’t true. Copy writers, graphic designers, and art directors also work in this field. Moving forward, the website also contains information about finding a job in advertising and how to create a portfolio of work. There is no shortage of information due to the fact that the website links you to multiple other websites relating to the topic. I originally chose this website because I was interested in advertising but once reading more about the job I’m not sure if this is a suitable career path for myself. However, I did enjoy learning about adverting and what the job requirements are. Careers in Advertising Public Relations. Careers in Marketing. Careers in Marketing, n. d. Web. 30 Sept. 2013. Carrers-in-marketing. com had information on both marketing and advertising but I chose to read more on advertising since I already had a lot of information about marketing. The article gives some general background information about advertising and the types of skills that are expected of you. Being well-organized and having people skills is among the most common requirements of an advertiser. Creativity isn’t a make or break deal but it definitely helps and makes you stand out from other potential candidates. The article also goes into detail about the many job options currently available for people in the field of advertising. Similar to the other article about advertising, this website mentions making flyers, pamphlets, and banners for online business. If one wants to further explore advertising, the website gives links to blogs dedicated on providing information about advertising. Overall this website linked me to some helpful resources for even further research but I’m still unsure about this career field. After researching for information on both topics, I better understand the difference between marketing and advertising. Although closely related at times, advertising requires spreading the word about different products while marketing brings both merchants and consumers together. Once I read through both job requirements, I’m currently leaning more towards marketing because I already have some prior experience and I currently know people in the industry.

Using Accessors and Mutators in Java

Using Accessors and Mutators in Java One of the ways we can enforce data encapsulation is through the use of accessors and mutators. The role of accessors and mutators are to return and set the values of an objects state. Lets learn how to program accessors and mutators in Java. As an example, well use a Person class with the state and constructor already defined: Accessor Methods An accessor method is used to return the value of a private field. It follows a naming scheme prefixing the word get to the start of the method name. For example lets add accessor methods for firstname, middleNames and lastname: These methods always return the same data type as their corresponding private field (e.g., String) and then simply return the value of that private field. We can now access their values through the methods of a Person object: Mutator Methods A mutator method is used to set a value of a private field. It follows a naming scheme prefixing the word set to the start of the method name. For example, lets add mutator fields for address and username: These methods do not have a return type and accept a parameter that is the same data type as their corresponding private field. The parameter is then used to set the value of that private field. Its now possible to modify the values for the address and username inside the Person object: Why Use Accessors and Mutators? Its easy to come to the conclusion that we could just change the private fields of the class definition to be public and achieve the same results. Its important to remember that we want to hide the data of the object as much as possible. The extra buffer provided by these methods allows us to: Change how the data is handled behind the scenes.Impose validation on the values that the fields are being set to. Lets say we decide to modify how we store middle names. Instead of just one String we can now use an array of Strings: The implementation inside the object has changed but the outside world is not affected. The way the methods are called remains exactly the same: Or, lets say the application that is using the Person object can only accept usernames that have a maximum of ten characters. We can add validation in the setUsername mutator to make sure the username conforms to this requirement: Now if the username passed to the setUsername mutator is longer than ten characters it is automatically truncated.

Why the arab countries are not paying attention to the mental health Essay

Why the arab countries are not paying attention to the mental health issues compared to the west - Essay Example However, there is no single study that has elucidated on the continued negligence of different stakeholders on the issue. Nevertheless, some research has indicated that the frequency of mental disorders does not vary much across the globe Ghodse, 2011). In this regard, it is correct to argue that Arab countries are not different. However, it is critical to review why Arab countries stand out to be distinct given that there are no disparities in terms of variation in mental illnesses between Arab countries and the west. It is apparent that the only difference in mental disorders in the Arab countries and the west is how the two different regions perceive and look at the issue. Studies have indicated that the manifestations of the mental illnesses vary with culture. In fact, in many developing countries, mental illnesses are highly characterized with the culture of those particular countries. The data, believes, and attitudes of persons in these areas dictate how the illnesses are addr essed. However, as Suad, (2006) stipulates, the problem in many Arab countries is not on how difficult it is to deal or treat mental disorders, it has to do with how well physicians or psychiatrists can be able to handle issues revolving around the illness. For example, there is a need to articulate on why people have negative attitude towards mentally ill persons. Basically, Mooney, et al. (2011) argues that, these attitudes have several and severe consequences to both the patient and the society. This is highly seen where even if the patient is well treated and attended to by the psychiatrist, the situation gets no better especially when the public view such patients as outcasts or inhuman. Therefore, even if the patient is treated, discrimination, which is mostly associated with negative attitudes in such societies, tends to manifest itself (Corrigan, et al., 2011). In light with this, the patient may continue to suffer psychologically as they try to contemplate that some people view them differently. There has also been a problem with how psychiatrists attend to persons with mental disorders in Arab countries. As McKenzie, et al. (2012) contends, this is highly attributed to the fact that the mode of treatment of persons with mental illnesses is not advanced. It is indispensible to have psychiatry programs upgraded in order to integrate modern teaching techniques, which would go a long way in bringing up more competent psychiatrists. Moreover, the upcoming doctors needs to be trained in such a way that they will be in a position to establish a rapport relationship with their patients in order to have in-depth analysis of the patient’s condition (Faraone, et al., 1999). Another major concern is on how psychiatrists can utilise the unique cultural traits that exists in these countries to counter any negative factors surrounding mental illnesses. For example, it is believed that religion and family settings can be utilised in reverting the negative att itudes towards mentally ill persons. This is arguably true because family ties in many Arab countries are strong. Therefore, they can be used to strengthen social support to issues revolving around positivity and support for mentally ill persons, rather than discriminating against them. In regard to religions, it is believed that religions can as well be utilised in impacting and preaching good deeds that induces good traits in their believers, and this can be used to protect mentally ill persons from discrimination and harm (Stuart, 2005). Discrimination is well manifested in situations where a certain religion belief insinuates that mentally ill persons are sort of coursed or outcasts. Therefore, if such religions are educated on severity and vagueness of such beliefs, then they

Designing women art Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Designing women art - Essay Example The characters include Dixie Carter, Annie Pott, Jean Smatt and Starring Delta Burke. The narrative and dialog is very articulated and passes the information in very sober manner. The sole information being adopted in the move is the role of women in the church. The role that they are being given in their capacity to serve. This role according to the movie is measured against the quality they possess (Alsup & Wendy, 2008 pg.30). A good example of the role that women get in church against the quality that they possess is when one of Jean Smatt who it is said that she has a good voice that can be productive in ministering the word of God, she is relegated to only singing. One of the male chauvinist does not by the idea and says that women used to minister a long time ago but not in the modern time. The field of ministering the word is dominated by men, unlike the past. On that note, it can clearly be seen due gender profiling and overlooking the capability of women is the main cause of subordinating women in active roles (Alsup & Wendy, 2008 pg.46). Most importantly, in the movie is when female character shows their importance biblically. First, women were missionaries and they helped to many people through their mission. This show the role of women in the church has been helpful and diverse to the extent that they went the far places as the missionaries for the outreach programs of the other people in the far places to help them see the light. On note, its important to remember that in church, women right away from history to the modern time, the role of women in the growth of the church cannot be underestimated. Interestingly, in the movie another role of the movie has been well illustrated by use one Starring Delta Burke and other women in conversation with one of the men. In the conversation, from a biblical point of view, the role of women and how they need to be represented is brought out from a much

Comparison of China and Russias Economic Systems

Comparison of China and Russias Economic Systems Introduction In today’s political and economic world, many governments have been in a state of paradox about the allocation of scare resources (Riley, 2012). In fact in economics the main issue every economist addresses is what resources should be provided, who to provide it for and how should it be provided (N/A, 2012). Every economy has a different economic system in which they decide on how these questions should be addressed. In economics there are three main economic systems; free market, planned economy and mixed economy. Over the years many economies have transformed from being a command economy to free or mixed economies such as China and Russia (Kotz, 2005). Some economists have questioned these transformations as to whether it has been beneficial for the concerned governments. In this essay I will examine this statement by comparing the two respective economies with the help of reliable and valid research and reaching a rational conclusion. My hypothesis, which is based on my gen eral knowledge about the political and economic situations of Russia and China, is that adopting a mixed economic system has helped both economies respectively in terms of international trade and a more efficient and competitive domestic market. Economic Theory A planned economy is an economy where economic decisions are centrally planned by the government (N/A, 2014). Essentially the central state or government plans the allocation of between the current consumption of the whole economy and the required investment for the long run. (Sloman Garratt, 2010). Centralized governments increase the economic growth rate by sacrificing some of the present consumption and diverting useful resources into investment (Cukierman.A, Hercowitz.Z, Liederman.L, 1992). The amount of its scare resources would depend on the government’s macroeconomic strategy. Secondly at a microeconomic level, the authorities plan the output of each of its industry, the factors of production of its businesses and the techniques that will be used (Sloman Garratt, 2010). Finally in a planned economy, the officials also plan the distribution of output between consumers. It distributes goods and services according to people’s needs and wants and normally they dist ribute the goods and services directly (system of rationing). From this we can contend that the most common market structure in this type of economy is monopoly (Appendix 1 Figure 1). This indicates that there is only one operating firm in the industry which decides all the allocation of resources due to lack of competition and complete power. On the other hand free market economies are economies based on the interaction of supply and demand with little or no government control (N/A, N/D). A mix of these two distinctive economies, which includes a mixture of capitalism and socialism, is known as a mixed economy (N/A, N/D). Both types of economic systems encourage that individuals are free to make their own economic choices; workers can choose on how much to work, consumers can buy freely with their incomes and most importantly businesses are free to choose what to sell and how to produce (reference). It can be argued that in these types of economies, there are many industries that experience perfect competition (Appendix 1 Figure 2 and 3). This signifies that there are â€Å"many market structures where there are many firms due to freedom of entry which produce identical products and services; where all firms are price takers (Sloman Garratt, 2010). This is because the governments encourage business competition by giving freedom to the private sector thus there are many start-ups. However the main question is that which economic system is the most effective and efficient? In the next part I will look at the advantages of disadvantages of both types of economies by using two dominant economies; China and Russia. China and Russia; two previous communist states Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao were the first people to introduce China to communism in June 1921 while Russia was introduced to communism in 1917 by their leader Lenin (Simkin, n.d.). The benefits of being a planned economy such as China and Russian in the early 1900s are numerous. Firstly, planned economies â€Å"are great at allocating scarce economic resources quickly, efficiently and on a large scale† due decisions being centralized by the government. This helps the economy avoid inefficiencies such as illegal practices as there are no ‘middle men’. Secondly, governments can carry out big projects, create industrial power and attain important goals for society as their main motive is to meet society’s needs (Amadeo, 2013 n.p.). In addition due to the government distributing goods and services directly the society would benefit from merit and public goods such as good public healthcare, improved public transport and excellent public education. As a result thi s would help improve the standard of living of people of Russia and China in the early 1900s. Though mixed economy has advantages one should also consider the drawbacks of the previous communist China and Russia. Firstly, the main disadvantage is that there is less competition in the economy of Russia and China due to all decisions being taken by the government hence there is lack of innovation and efficiency. Secondly, in a planned economy, there is a lot of money and resources wasted in the communication between the government and the firms, which again makes the economy ineffective and inefficient (DineshBakshi.com,2012). Finally resource allocation being centralized means that there is no individual liberty. Consumers have less choice from goods and services because everything is made and decided by the government and workers cannot work according to their choice, which refers to that they cannot work for longer hours. (Sloman Garratt, 2010). China and Russia; transition from communism to mixed economy China transformed itself from communism to mixed economy in late 1970’s whereas; Russia transformed its economy from communism to mixed economy in early 1990’s. Post the fall of communism in both economies, China and Russia have benefited in several ways by being a mixed economy. Firstly in a mixed economy, governments encourage competition and give freedom to the private sector on what to produce and for whom to produce. This helps the economy operate and use resources more efficiently as private businesses are concerned with maximizing profits thus they would operate as efficient as possible (Amadeo, 2011). In the long run both economies will experience economic growth (Appendix 1 Figure 4). Secondly with some government intervention in the market, monopolies will not be able to form in markets thus reducing the risk of market failure (Dineshbakshi.com, 2012). Finally with firms operating freely and efficiently, China and Russia’s export will increase, as local businesses are able to compete on an international scale (Amadeo, 2011). Being a mixed economy such as China and Russia also consists of disadvantages, which can affect the economic growth and stability of both economies. Though giving freedom to businesses might lead to economic growth in the short run, there might be inflation in the economy, which can lead to higher prices of inputs such as raw materials and labor wages (Pettinger. T, N/D. hence businesses will start to experience a rise in their costs, which can lead to them being less profitable as result negatively affecting the economy. Another key disadvantage of mixed economy is that there might be external costs to society by the increase in competition in the private sector. This is known as a negative externality of production, which is a type of market failure (Appendix 1 Figure 5) Conclusion In conclusion after carrying out explicit and detailed research on the economies of China and Russia and analyzing the two economic systems, it is fair and reliable to say that being a mixed economy is more beneficial than operating as a planned economy. In fact in today’s world China is considered as the second largest economy in the world due to its high economic growth and stability. Similarly Russia has also thrived on exports of oil and gas by becoming a mixed economy due to trading with the world. If we consider today’s current communist states such as North Korea, one can argue that these economies have been on the downfall due to inefficiency in the local market and the international market. Personally I believe that in economies a balance is necessary for any economy to thrive in thus in a mixed economy there is balance between freedom to the private sector and government intervention.

Plagiarism and the Internet :: Cheating Education Essays

Plagiarism and the Internet It appears that plagiarism is a problem that has very unclear guidelines according to most. People seem to be struggling with the concept of it in regards to the internet because others do realize the vastness of information on the internet is very difficult to regulate in plagiarism. The realization is that in many institutions instructors simply overlook the crime because they themselves find it too tedious to check all the information on the websites to verify their originality. This seems shocking because of all the warnings students receive about plagiarism. The largest concern it seems is finding ways to sift through all the information that is turned in for a paper. One of the websites used to aide in this process is turnitin.com. It is a place where students can send their papers to be checked. It searches the internet and finds anything that is plagiarized in the entire paper. This then also rids the instructor from having to check all the sources the student used because that is what the website does. "Who wants to sit around looking for websites trying to find out if a paper is plagiarized or not... pretty soon you're a private investigator." -- a Stanford University professor, from an article in TechWeb News. (http://www.plagiarism.org/plagiarism_stats.html) While the internet is so huge and many ideas circulate throughout it at all times, there are proper ways to do a research paper without having a problem with plagiarism. There are several websites that list the proper way to cite several types of information on the web. There are plenty of resources available giving out information and warnings about plagiarism. One website offers information about the situations instructor face when dealing with students who plagiarize. The website commented that it is something that can be  ¡Ãƒ a painful, time-consuming experience for faculty. ¡ÃƒÅ" Because there are different levels of plagiarism sometimes faculty feel that the punishments that universities give are too much and need to vary with the level of plagiarism.
